LPO - Ligue de protection des oiseaux - PACA Region
In 1898, schoolteachers founded a first "league for the protection of birds"1.
In 1908, Albert Chappellier, during a trip to the Sept-Îles archipelago, noticed the poor condition of the Atlantic puffin colony. On his return, he put forward the idea of creating a protected area2.
In 1912, Lieutenant Hémery denounced the slaughter of Atlantic puffins by hunters on the north coast of Brittany, with the Compagnie des chemins de fer de l'Ouest notably organising safaris there3. According to the historian Rémi Luglia, the idea of dedicating a sub-section of the Société d'acclimatation to the protection of birds is said to have come from Albert Chappellier and several colleagues from that society, including the ornithologist Louis Magaud d'Aubusson4,5 (1847-1917), commonly regarded as the founding father of the LPO and of the Sept-Îles reserve.
