The municipal olive picking began earlier than expected and will continue as the fruit ripens.
The atmosphere is getting warmer and warmer as the pickers get to know one another.
Some harvests are almost miraculous, with plump black olives that are a joy to see and to pick. Other trees have run wild, and the few olives they offer us are out of reach.
We have an electric comb, and when we use it, olives fly off in every direction. Then you have to gather them up or... run after them!
In short, precious moments of conviviality while we wait for January, when we can enjoy "our" oil!
Hello,
We welcomed the new members of our association on 17/10, who told us about their wishes and the difficulties they face in their gardens. Here is a quick introduction to them, so that you can get in touch if you have any answers to offer.
■ Jean-Michel and Michèle have a large park in Garéoult and are having problems with pests on their palm trees. They have lots of little Butia to give away (edible fruit somewhere between a plum and a pineapple) and olive trees to harvest.
■ Denis is offering a record of temperatures over recent decades in La Roquebrussanne, to help us see clearly the change our gardens have to adapt to. He would like to get more involved in his garden, creating a small vegetable patch (in square beds?).
■ Magalie has just moved to Garéoult and is looking for agricultural land to set up a nursery of trees suited to our climate and to organise workshops introducing trades linked to the use of plants (dyeing, weaving...); she is trained in permaculture, already has experience in reforestation and has managed a plant spa.
■ Julie has had an ornamental garden in Garéoult for 10 years, which she would like to put more into so that it is prettier and more colourful, but she finds the soil difficult... and isn't quite sure where to start. She also has an olive tree whose fruit she would like to make better use of (her brining failed last year), a very good vine, and fruit trees. She is interested in medicinal plants and is starting to train in the wellbeing field.
■ Patrick and Corinne have a small 20 m2 vegetable plot that didn't do well this year, and they are looking for good, productive tomato varieties. They grow citrus trees in pots and have 2 olive trees.
■ Véronique has been growing vegetables for 40 years in La Roquebrussanne. Her soil is well enriched and she has had some very fine harvests in the past, but she has struggled since the severe droughts of recent years. She would welcome advice on shade structures, water-saving techniques...
Pascal spoke to us again about his very encouraging experiment this summer spraying white clay on fruit trees – to be continued! He has also renewed his call for cuttings and scions of interesting fruit varieties (contact him for the timing and technical methods)
Our seed library has been enriched once more with around 300 packets – available at the session on 17/11 at the Moulin.
Patrice is offering bamboo canes for building structures, and announces a "pond clean-out" work day in the spring, with the chance to take home some lovely water lilies.
Our association is built on sharing experience, so please don't hesitate to take an active part. Long live mutual help!
See you soon,

I invite you to discover a very special landscape hidden in the hills above Méounes-les-Montrieux.
On the RD 554 towards Méounes, coming from Néoules or La Roquebrussanne, go past Verdi matériaux, then the first bus stop on the right (the one that has just been renovated – Planestel district). After another 700 m, turn left at the second stop (the "Planesselve" stop).
Continue along this narrow road, which has 2 hairpin bends over 2.5 km, and go through the Pleine Selve district
as far as the photovoltaic field.
Route from La Roquebrussanne to Planesselve: urlr.me/4kqwJu
Once you get there, you have two options:
A - Either you have a vehicle suitable for driving very slowly along a rough track, in which
case you can continue to the right, uphill, as far as the bend about 500 m away (red dot on the
map). You can park there (maximum 2 cars).
B – Or you don't, in which case you will need to park near the water tanks (green dot) and continue on foot
to the red dot.
Once there, you still have 400 m uphill to reach the plateau at the top of the hill (blue dot).
GPS coordinates or Google maps : 43.272597, 5.985744
or 43°16'21.35"N 5°59'08.68"E
You will discover an astonishing landscape made up of many varieties of plants, each of different sizes.
One of them, the great mullein, or Verbascum Thapsus, grows here from a few tens of centimetres
to nearly 2 m tall.
If you can go at the end of a fine day, the sunset is particularly beautiful, with the
play of light on the plants and the surrounding forests.
To enjoy this landscape, all you need is good physical fitness and sturdy shoes, as the path is quite
long and a little uneven.
The accompanying photos show what the brave souls who try the experience will discover.
This plant is a great mullein (or Aaron's rod), scientific name Verbascum thapsus.
It is a very common biennial plant that is easily recognised by the features visible in the photo:
• A tall, upright flower spike bearing small, bright yellow flowers.
• Very thick, downy foliage covered in a felt of fine whitish or greyish hairs, giving it a woolly look and a soft feel.
It is a hardy species that grows readily on waste ground and in stony, sunny places.
Historically, it is known as a medicinal plant (notably for soothing the respiratory tract) and its dried stems were once used as torches in the Middle Ages
